The online Carpet Index establishes the presence of non-Muslim carpets in European religious paintings before the year 1500. This allows us to understand them not as trade items, but as venerated Christian relics. These carpets then become indicators of the movement of eastern Christians westward into Europe, in advance of the Sunni warriors that came to dominate their ancestral lands in Asia Minor
